However, sorting the effect of redundancy on mental health remains to be problematical due to the fact that it cause and effect association can be capitalized in both directions. For example, it is true that unemployment tends to make individuals enthusiastically unbalanced than they were initially employed. Therefore, unemployment will result in worsening of mental health and mental health issues may make it more cumbersome or difficult for a discrete to acquire or embrace a job.

Unemployment does not only led to an increased likelihood of disease, but it can greatly affect the mental health of the affected individuals. For example, in the United States of America, approximately three percent of the population suffer depression unemployment, poverty as well as social isolation are the main contributors of increased depression in the united stated of America and across the globe (Warr, 2007).

The recent recession has hit most of the individuals regardless of race, economic class as well as age. Most of the individuals take unemployment like something that could not happen to them. Due to the all-encompassing effect of unemployment, including physical ramification, stress, alcohol and substance abuse, unemployment can also affect individuals’ mental illness resulting in depression. In relation to the recent national survey in the United States of America, 57% of the unemployment individuals have responded that they are not satisfied with their life as a whole.

According to diagnostic and statistical manual has defined depression as a state of having the following symptoms for more a period of more than two weeks. The first symptom is depressed mood most part of the day, which can be indicated by the realization of the subjective report such as feeling sad or appealing tearful. Additionally, other symptoms, which can be compared to depression include diminished interest, which is noticed by the observation capitalized by others. Moreover, depression can be realized by the occurrence of significant weight loss, which results from a decrease in appetite. Other symptoms, which can be comparable to depression include retardation, insomnia as well as hypersomnia. These are some of the prevalent symptoms, which can ascertain that an individual is depressed.

These symptoms are not only related to unemployed individuals but also the families. In the United States of America department of health and human services, there is the indication that the increase in the rate of unemployment increases the rate of psychological impacts on families. Additionally, unemployment as well as underemployed can augment stress and inclusive negative effects of families resulting in an individual overall mental illness (Warr, 2007).

However, most of the individuals who have affected by depression have realized effective ways such as keeping busy, emotional release and at the same time, withdrawal. However, even though most of the individuals have engaged in coping with the behaviors, they all have a short-term effect. Even though the coping skills helped, there is the prospect that the symptoms of depression may return. Therefore, it is conclusive that depression remains to be a major impact on unemployment, thus causing the mental health of the affected individual (Murphy & Athanasou, 2009).

Self Esteem

Self- esteem have a reflection on the overall emotional evaluation of an individual self-worth. Therefore, it is the decision comprehended by a person regarding his or her self- worth. Joblessness can also consequence in reduced or nonexistence of self-esteem and self-doubt. Self-esteem is the evaluation, which is capitalized by an individual in order to customarily maintain himself or herself. Besides, self-esteem expresses an attitude of approval or disapproval towards an individual. Most of the researchers have found that unemployment remains to be a momentous provider to deleterious or low self-esteem. It has been disputed that financial scarcity or loss of job led to discernments of powerlessness as well as forfeiture of sovereignty.

In relation to the study conducted, some of the individuals indicated that income and employment provided a source of control in one’s life, roles and social interaction. Additionally, others indicated that employment is a social impact as an inclusive tool, which can be capitalized in maintaining self-esteem. Therefore, unemployment can result in lack of self-esteem as well as cause success fears. Therefore, individuals with low self-esteem had the higher fear of failure and develop strategies for self-worth protection such as self-handicapping. Therefore, it true that unemployment can result in reduced or lack of self-esteem to individuals (Linn, Sandifer & Stein, 2005).

Standard of living

The loss of income, which can be as the result of unemployment could lead to the decline in living standard. This would, in turn, affect the mental health of the affected persons. Unemployment might force individuals to reduce their living standards thus resulting in both physical and mental health of the affected individuals. The standard of living of an individual remains to be level of well-being during the times of employment. However, the moment when an individual is unemployed, there is the probability that his or her living standard will change drastically.

Due to this changes, there is the likelihood that the affected person will have mental health issues. The loss of a job or unemployment means that there is the likelihood that there is the loss of work colleagues and shrinking the social networks. The size of these effects on unemployment can bring about the decline in personal well- being thus affecting the mental health of the individual.

Conclusion

Individuals who have been reported being unemployed have a prospect of increased mental health as compared to employed individuals. It is the role of the government to address the issue of unemployment to its citizen in order to decrease the increasing mental health issues related to unemployment. Additionally, unemployment should be viewed as a health-risk health factor. Therefore, it is the role of government organizations such as centers for disease control in the United States of America to be in a position of attending to these issues the moments they occur. Moreover, the unemployed should be counseled and be able to pay special attention in order to prevent mental health. Therefore, during the time of unemployment, greater emphasis should be on healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise.

Through this, there is the prospect that this issue life has limited impact on mental health. Additionally, it is vital for everyone to understand that employment is not permanent since there can be job loss. Through this understanding, individuals can have an effective decision plans on how they can improve their living standard even if there were no employment. Therefore, it is the role of the government to educate its citizens on how to have effective plans regarding their life and not to wholly depend on employment (Linn, Sandifer & Stein, 2005). If this is achieved, there is the probability that there will be limited issues related to unemployment and mental health to the affected persons.
