Why must business professionals understand how Management Information Systems (MIS) supports decision making and problem solving? Give an example.

Business professional have to understand management information systems because the systems combine hardware, software and network products in an integrated solution that provides managers with data in a format suitable for analysis, monitoring, decision-making and reporting (Linton, 2019). Decision-making is an integral organizational process that impacts every level including individual or group (Akdere, 2011). The process includes the system collects the data, and stores it in a database and makes it available to users over a secure network. Managers, business professionals are responsible for making the tough but important decisions. They need rapid access to information to make decisions about strategic, financial, marketing and operational issues. Most companies collect large amounts of information including customer records, sales data, market research, financial records, manufacturing and inventory data and human resource records (Linton, 2019). Management Information Systems (MIS) role is to provide:

  • Rapid access to information
  • Decisions based on latest information
  • Team can collaborate
  • Interpret results efficiently
  • Ease of Presentation

Business professional use the data collected to see what the strong points of the company is and what are the parts that need to be worked on. For example business professionals that work in a call center, the management information systems allows to identify the inbound calls that are coming through the phone queues. It provides the data to upper management to determine how many reps to staff for the peek hours of operation. It allows them to determine how many people can use their personal time off and to make sure there is coverage. It is very important to understand how it supports decision making and problem solving within any business or organization. It can track the calls that are actually answered vs ones that were left dead in the queues and were never answered. It allows the professionals to be able to solve an staff or reporting errors to make sure the business is running smoothly.
