Final Paper Draft

This week, you will write a draft of your Final Paper. Your task is to observe speech in a particular setting and discuss it using Hymes’ S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model.

First, you will choose a setting for your observations. Appropriate settings include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Conversation between family members at a dinner table.
  • Conversation at a hair or nail salon.
  • Conversation between two people at a bar.
  • Conversation at a social event or dinner.
  • Conversation between staff members in a break room or work site.
  • Conversation between people at a coffee shop.

You will do a continuous 30- to 60-minute observation of a speech event on a set time and date. The observation needs to be in a continuous-time session, and the minimum or starting number of participants must stay constant in order for you to have rich and in-depth data. Therefore, sitting at a park and making one- or two-minute conversation with a passerby cannot be used as a sample. If you are one of the participants in the conversation, make note of that in your introduction. The sample should not be from an interview, but from a natural conversation. You must take thorough notes on the conversation. Alternatively, use a tape recorder if allowed by the participants.

Make sure you read Chapter 9 thoroughly before conducting the observation, and in particular, Table 9.1 of the textbook. You need to take notes on all eight aspects of the acronym. In addition, take notes on and describe the gender, power relations, age, ethnicity, race, and factors such as use of dialect, accent, paralinguistics, and so forth that inform the dynamic of the conversation. You will need to take notes on all eight aspects of the acronym while you conduct your observations. This week, you will write a draft of your Final Paper on your observations.

Writing the Final Paper Draft
Report the observed conversation with a combination of quoting direct speech and paraphrasing. All direct speech quotes must be followed by an explanation related to course concepts and/or Hymes’ S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model. You must use terms and concepts from your textbook and cite them in text. The draft must include the following:

  1. A title: 10 to 12 words maximum.
  2. An introduction: The introductory paragraph should begin with some background information and narrow it down to the paper topic in the last sentence or two in the thesis statement. Describe the setting and participants very briefly. This is the place to provide background information on the where, when, who, why, and how of the speech event. In the last sentence, include a thesis statement relating your observation to the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model. The thesis statement points the reader to the main foci of the paper and the order in which they will be discussed. Make sure your paper follows the order listed in the thesis statement.
  3. Body paragraphs: You may give each aspect of the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model a paragraph or more. A paragraph is like a mini paper. Start each paragraph with a thesis statement that includes what you will discuss. This will allow for smoother transition from one aspect to another. Then, include supporting direct and indirect conversation speech. Analyze your observations using terms and concepts from the textbook and scholarly sources (if applicable in this draft). If applicable, make sure the sources you use are related to your findings. Do not summarize the sources, simply use them to validate your arguments.
  4. A conclusion: Summarize the paper and return to the thesis statement. You may include comments about your observation experience. You can also point to further directions for research on this type of speech analysis. Remember, the conclusion is not a place to begin new topics.
  5. References: This week, relating information to the textbook is the only reference that is required. The Final Paper in Week Five will require the use of at least three scholarly sources, defined as peer-reviewed journal articles and eBooks from the Ashford University Library (encyclopedias and dictionaries can only serve as additional sources) that support your observations in addition to the textbook. Therefore, including other sources at this stage would be a good idea. Cite all sources in text and include them on the references page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.

The paper must be five to seven pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
