First, compare and contrast the struggles of the Black community and the transgender community in relation to crime and “justice” and discuss the role of intersectionality. Next, compare and contrast the social movements addressing these issues. Then, consider the role of social media in social change. What are the benefits and drawbacks of social media as a tool for social movements? What are the successes and failures of social movements like #blacklivesmatter? Finally, reflect on the quote that has been our theme for the semester: “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” How can we (as criminal justice scholars) change people’s consciousness and shape social movements? How can you produce or share knowledge that can have an impact on the social problems we have been confronting all semester?
